McMurray Métis Commemorate Louis Riel

This Métis Week the McMurray Métis are commemorating the life of Louis Riel by holding a public gathering for Elders, students and all Wood Buffalo residents at the Nistawoyou Friendship Centre.

Beginning at 10:30 AM we will showcase Louis Riel through videos, speeches, poems, jigging,fiddling, and an escape room for the next generation. We will lay a wreath and hold a minute of silence in memory of Louis Riel’s amazing life at 11:00 AM.  

Deputy Mayor Jeff Peddle also declared November 16, 2018: Louis Riel Day in Wood Buffalo via a Proclamation from the Mayor Don Scott.  


“Today is a very important date for all Métis People it was November 16th, 1885 that our fearless leader,Louis Riel was executed defending the Métis way of life. It’s important for everyone to remember his determination for equal rights and spirit of fight for the Métis Nation. A battle that we are still fighting. Our message today is of education and sharing his legacy with the next generation.”
